Mark James Lamberti
Founder, Massmart Holdings; and CEO, Imperial Holdings
From 1985 Lamberti embarked on an entrepreneurial journey employing strategy, organisation design and financial thought leadership to establish, develop, turn-around and lead the listing of three South African based companies on the JSE: Jazz Stores (small format convenience supermarkets for urban commuters); Massmart (consumer goods mass retailer grown from 6 stores in 1988 to 238 stores when Walmart acquired control in 2011); and Transaction Capital (non-deposit taking financial services).
Since March 2014, he has led the turnaround of Imperial Holdings, a group focussed on the logistics and vehicle value chains, mainly in sub Saharan Africa and the Eurozone. Imperial employs over 49 000 people in 33 countries and ranks among the largest companies on the JSE.
Lamberti is a non-executive director of Business Leadership South Africa, the National Education Collaboration Trust, recently Eskom and a benefactor, director, advisor or lecturer to various educational institutions.
His achievements have been widely acknowledged throughout his career, inspired and supported by Annette, the mother of their children Julia (39) and David (34) and punctuated by leisure time flying helicopters, playing the piano and trying to maintain dignity on snow skis.
